MASTER OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE
My dream is a world in which all physicians and allied health professionals have been trained in evidence-based lifestyle medicine, integrating healthful behaviors into their own lives and incorporating a lifestyle medicine-first approach into their clinical practices. From Canada to Australia, the United States of America to Asia, Europe to Latin America, Lifestyle Medicine is being recognized by all as the foundation for sustainable healthcare.
Robert Jhonson
THE REASONS FOR A MASTER’S DEGREE IN LIFESTYLE MEDICINE
It is estimated that 80% of chronic disease can be prevented with modification of lifestyle behaviors, specifically not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in physical activity, and adhering to healthy dietary principles. However, less than 50% of U.S primary care physicians routinely provide specific guidance on nutrition, physical activity, or weight control. This may be a direct result of insufficient training, as there is no curricular model for the discipline of lifestyle medicine in undergraduate medical education.
Currently, only 27% of medical schools have indicated that they provided the 25 hours of nutrition education recommended, with most averaging only 19.6 hours, and only 6% of medical school leaders polled reported having a core course or required curriculum that addresses exercise having a coreprescription. Further, despite a clear definition of Lifestyle Medicine competencies for physicians there are no curriculum guidelines, validated assessment tools, evaluation, or implementation plans in place. The Jhonson Robert University works to fill this educational gap through online and live continuing medical education (CME) courses, inserting the best teachers and specialists worldwide to be able to provide excellent training.
The goal of the Master’s in Lifestyle Medicine is to offer a program that focuses on whole person health by providing students the knowledge, skill and values to work with people on an individual level to improve their personal health and well-being and prevent the onset and/or progression of chronic diseases.
OVERVIEW
The Lifestyle medicine is the application of simple, natural healing approaches to chronic disease care and prevention. Today’s standard medical school curriculum rarely includes education about exercise, nutrition, sleep and physical activity. Given the current epidemic of disease related to sedentary behavior, it is imperative to train future providers to understand the relationship between lifestyle and health.
The MLM prepares all health care professionals to: - Prevent, treat and reverse chronic disease through lifestyle choices. - Use LM practice, tools and resources to facilitate behavior change interventions. - Apply LM evidence-based literature to help patients and their families manage and sustain behavior change. - Evaluate patient’s outcomes to improve effectiveness of patient care using LM. - Care for patients through collaboration with inter-professional team.
Physicians who practice lifestyle medicine must also live healthily themselves. A doctor can offer greatest help to patients when he or she knows what it’s like to make nutritious food choices, stay physically active, prioritize rest and life balance, and consistently pursue healthful relationships and support systems. Patients are more likely to follow the advice of a physician who leads by example.
